"OUALIE"

Cockleshell Bay Beach, St.-Christophe — St. Kitt’s and Nevis

The native Kittitian peoples named this Caribbean island Oualie, or “Land of the Beautiful Waters.” Its lesser-fitting modern name, Nevis, was adapted from explorers naming it “Las Nieves” which means, “Lady of the Snows.” The explorer’s name for the island referenced the clouds surrounding it.
